Since its debut more than forty years ago, email has come a long way. What was once a form of communication for the tech and nerd types, it is now one of the most common ways to keep in touch in our personal and business lives.
Email had been around for almost ten years before the term “email” was actually created to describe this new type of communication. The Oxford English Dictionary has also added a good amount of email acronyms, such as OMG, LOL, and the symbol for heart, since they have become such a large part of our technology-centric lives.
The AP Stylebook has amended the spelling of e-mail to email just this year, which helps decrease the abundant usage of hyphens. But for most people in casual talk and writing, they simply skipped the hyphen.
To commemorate the 40th anniversary of email and its progress, here’s a timeline dedicated to email’s success.
